 Tuesday June 4, 2013 – LGBT Refugees Last Chance flim screening @ Hot Docs Cinema Politica. Their names are Trudi, Carlos, Jennifer, Zaki and Alvaro. They come from Jamaica, Colombia, Lebanon, Egypt and Nicaragua, and are seeking asylum in Canada because of their sexual orientation. The documentary Last Chance by Paul Émile d’Entremont retraces the turbulent journeys of five people who flee their native countries to escape homophobic violence. They face hurdles integrating into Canada, fear deportation and nervously await a decision that will change their lives forever. Izad Etemadi’s one-man show Borderland is a play about an Iranian gay man on the run, trying to escape from his own country. (Etemadi is, indeed, Iranian and gay), Borderland isn’t a relentlessly heavy drama. “There are light moments, and there are happy moments,” he explained. “There’s got to be contrast in any drama.” A graduate of the Canadian College of Performing Arts in Victoria, where he studied musical theatre, Etemadi also completed the musical theatre program at the Banff Arts Centre, and has studied voice for most of his life.
