We added a new page, to our main community website, a couple of weeks ago, since things are perking in Queer West Toronto, Ontario. Some of our queer Toronto readers of this grok blog, might be interested Pride Toronto West - Cycling event and Pride Picnic Saturday June 11, 2005. Give you a little R & R from blog reading, make some new friends and have some fun, a little different than the tourist thing call Pride Toronto Festival with a zillion people.
Why Pride in Toronto West? Pride Toronto celebrations were originally about building a movement, a day to build community organizations and to get people involved in political campaigns. For the last 15 years Toronto City Pride planners, along with local officials and business elites, seem much more concerned with reorganizing the event to bolster the local tourist industry. Pride Toronto West annual week of Pride events is about bringing back Pride to a local level, where families and the GLBTTIQ community our organizations, clubs, groups matter. We neither ask or receive any government funding, support comes from members and community donations. This is the reason Pride Toronto West is not associated with Pride Toronto.
The queer district in Toronto West is comprised of four diverse neighbourhoods, Dupont, High Park, Parkdale, The Annex and Trinity Bellwoods-Spadina. We believe that providing a safe and nurturing environment for individuals, groups and organizations is the key to keeping our community alive and vibrant. It is our goal to foster individual empowerment and to give everyone a better sense of the GLBTTIQ (Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender, Two-Sprited, Intersex and Queer) community spirit in the queer village, Toronto west. We do this by organizing and sponsoring community activities and by increasing public awareness and understanding of our GLBTTIQ lives. For many people, Gay and Lesbian Families and Gay Youth, Pride is a day of personal empowerment. Only by standing together can we make a difference. You worked hard all year building this westend community.
