Story by Paul Gallant (Xtra.ca) Toronto edition July 21, 2005 ( not available online?)
Out Roncesvalles way - Old world charm with new world perks
[ This photo did not appear in Gallant's story. Photograph below was taken on Roncesvalle Ave south of Howard Park. The Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) streetcar travelling north is a King Streetcar on it's way to the Dundas Subway Station at Bloor Street....DQ]
(My reference to this article was originally published 7/28/05)
This article was removed, at the nagging insistence of Paul Gallant, managing editor of Xtra newspaper, who writes " The tone of your site is often hostile toward Xtra and sometimes makes inaccurate claims about us, which tempts me to ask you to take the story down. But I've given permission for rightwing homophobes (Moi a homophobe?) to reprint my Xtra material - I love it when people who seem to have a problem with what I say are complicit in spreading my words -- provided that they publish the piece unedited and tag it, "This piece is reprinted with permission of Xtra."
Even Julie Kinnear, a top Toronto realtor mentioned in the story, gave Gallant a credit line when she referenced his story in "this blog" knowing full well that I didn't write it. Now Gallant will have to scurry over and rap Kinnear's knuckles and tell her she can't be proud that she was mention in his story.
Gallant is getting picky in it's old age, probably smarting from the city's proposed new bylaw that will limit newspaper boxes bunched around town, which in many cases are an eyesore.
But finding a copy of Xtra gay and lesbian newspaper [www.xtra.ca the full edition is not available online, just a couple of articles and lots of ads.] in the Queer West Toronto, has never been easy. There are no boxes, near my office at Dufferin and Dundas, I have to walk about 16 blocks to find the lastest copy. Yet in my neighbourhood there is a gay bathhouse and half a dozen queer bars and nary an Xtra newspaper box in sight. But then Gallant's Xtra doesn't recognize the existence of the nascent gay village in the west end of Toronto. You would think that Xtra would be proud that gay Toronto is growing and new little villages (districts) are springing up all over the city, well I suppose they do half heartly, as one big gay Toronto village.
I always try to give credit, to the author and publication as I did with this story [ Story by Paul Gallant (Xtra.ca) Toronto edition July 21, 2005 as per above] and a link back to the original story, if available, (I couldn't find this story online anywhere.) But this wasn't good enough for Gallant, who is out to punish bloggers, especially ones that wack Toronto's gay ghetto or Xtra.
I would have liked to re-publish this story, but his credit line request, belongs in a 99 cent hard covered book, one would find a bargain bin, at the world's biggest book store on Edward's Street. "This piece is reprinted with permission of Xtra."
Using the above phrase and Paul Gallant in Google search turned up nada.
So here's bottom line in Gallant's story. Roncesvalles Village in Parkdale-High Park neighbourhood is Toronto's hottest area for gay realtors and those looking for a queer friendly neighbourhood to move into, with their wives, families or friends.
Gallant signed his letter, with this artsy-fartsy little signature,
'Cheers

With guys like Gallant representing Toronto's gay media, maybe it's time to boycott Xtra, till they have a more balanced approach in their feature articles. Rather than being smug about Toronto as one big gay village.
