Brockton Writers Series is a monthly literary series that welcomes established and emerging writers and the people who love to read their work. Saturday November 4 - CHARTattack photographer Graham Kennedy presents a new set of works at Toronto's OZ Studio. Kennedy will focus on manipulating images he shot of iconic grunge, rock and metal artists in the '90s, rendering his all-too-familiar subjects into something completely different. Amongst the acts that will get this unique treatment are Nirvana, Soundgarden, Metallica, Judas Priest and Alice Cooper. The show officially opens Nov. 4 at 7 p.m. and will be on display until Nov. 14. Previews are available by appointment starting Nov. 1. Workman Arts presents the 18th Annual Toronto Rendezvous with Madness film festival -Set to hit the big screen November 5th - 13th with over 20 programs of feature and short films. RWM continues to revel in the mysteries of the mind, exploring the facts and mythologies surrounding mental illness and addiction. This year, using a mix of video conferencing, and live participation; filmmakers, people with lived mental health experiences and mental health experts will participate in screenings and discussion panels in order to bring together disparate voices from around the world.

The Distance Between Michael Fahd, Australia, 2009, 24min, World Premiere, English. Michael Fahd’s twisted but mesmerizing coming-of-age tale revolves around 14-year-old Raymond, the son of a dead-beat father and alcoholic mother, who has an animated fantasy about escaping the angst of his sexually-confused youth. A great distance exists between his vision of happiness and the gritty reality he actually chooses. Saturday November 6 - Come to the Parkdale Public Library to meet a American Freedom Writer Teacher and watch the film and take part in a writing exercise, come learn about "Freedom Writers". Take a group of restless, inner city students raised in the wrong side of the tracks, a determined teacher with a mission, and a session in Room 203, exploring beyond what is written in textbooks, and you get a movement that starts through writing. "Freedom Writers" is based on the true story of Erin Gruwell (played by Hilary Swank) and a diverse group of racially charged students. Unfortunate moments add up to memories that scar us with little or no explanation as to "why" it had to happen. This film inspires viewers to give hope a chance, even under the pressures of society. The Freedom Writers found an outlet to express their angst and rebellion through the help of their mentor, their teacher. Together, they mentally battled their way to survival.
