Thursday May 2 and Friday May 3, 2013 – One Red Thing @ Buddies.
A group of actors and dancers were invited to create work for this new
production. They were given the direction to use black, white and grey,
for their creative land scape. They were also told to incorporate one
red thing into their piece. This production is proving to be a dynamic
salon full of unexpected twists and turns! It is also proving to own a
great deal of thought provoking content. The performers, while creating
their work, had to ask themselves what their one red thing would be. The
question then became “What is my one red thing?”

Thursday May 3 to May 11, 2013 – Life x 3 @ Unit 102 Theatre.
Damsels in De-Stress Productions invites you to experience Life x 3 by
Yasmina Reza at Unit 102 Theatre. Henry and Sonia are (unsuccessfully)
putting their 6-year-old son to bed when Henry’s bombastic colleague
Hubert and his wife Inez show up to dinner – a day earlier than
expected. Ever resourceful, Henry and Sonia serve up a confection of
cheezits, chocolate fingers, and pistachios washed down with copious
amounts of Sancerre – but the evening quickly disintegrates. Over the
course of the play, the audience is treated to three versions of this
comically disastrous evening. You’ll laugh, you’ll cringe, and you’ll
have to stop at the corner store to pick up a bag of cheezits on the way
home. Unit 102 Theatre 376 Dufferin St., Toronto, CA http://damselsindestress.ca/

Friday May 3 to June 1, 2013 – Opening Reception: Queer Portraits – JJ Levine – Toronto Exhibition @ Gallery 44.
Queer Portraits is an ongoing series of large-scale colour photographs
of Levine’s community in Montreal, capturing the complex emotional
relationships of the artist with his friends, lovers, and siblings. Each
portrait is taken in a different domestic setting, characterized by
saturated colours, and often discursive backgrounds. Using professional
lighting and a medium format film camera, Levine creates a studio within
each home environment, and intentionally places every piece of
furniture and object that appears within the frame. These settings are
intended to raise questions regarding private queer space as a realm for
the development of community and the expression of genders and
sexualities that are often marginalized within the public sphere.

Sunday May 5, 2013 – Documentary Flim on Continental Bath and Health Club in New York City before AIDS @ Bloor Cinema. In
1968, homosexuality was illegal in NYC. Gay bars were dark, dirty,
dangerous and mostly controlled by the syndicate. But then along came
Steve Ostrow, opera singer and entrepreneur, with a grand vision. From
the minute Ostrow opened the elegant Continental Bath and Health Club in
the legendary Ansonia Hotel, it was a beacon for the hip, the beautiful
and the infamous. With a cabaret stage featuring red hot performers
like Bette Midler and Labelle, straight high society, celebs and hunky
men in towels jammed into the same room, bringing gays into the open and
ultimately playing a critical role in overturning anti-gay laws.
Director Malcolm Ingram deftly weaves Ostrow’s astonishingly frank
stories with those of luminaries like author Edmund White, singer Sarah
Dash from Labelle, Warhol superstar Holly Woodlawn, and house music
inventor Frankie Knuckles into a smart, steamy and political history of
the hypersexual culture in the era before AIDS. Lynne Fernie. Bloor Hot

Wednesday May 8 to 25, 2013 – Opening of Canadian Opera Company Dialogues of the Carmelites @ Four Seasons Centre.
Xtra Newspaper
reports, this is the gayest opera at the COC this season. (Though,
note, completely devoid of gaiety: dead serious and gay can coexist, and
the ironic distance is not a precondition for queer aesthetics.)
Poulenc was as openly gay as an artist could be in France of the 1930s
to 1950s and had a famously promiscuous love life as well as a firm
allegiance to Catholicism. By many accounts, he composed the Carmelites
as the young man that he loved lay dying of tuberculosis. “Blanche,
c’est moi,” he was later quoted as saying. Canadian Opera Company, Four

Saturday May 11, 2013 – CHRONOLOGIC @ The Garrison
A dance party through the ages. Pop and Antipop from Since the End of
History. I. e. Music from 1890 to 2013, played in chronological order…
The
Garrison is a space that is now the home to some of the popular indie
events in the city, and what Queen West was back in the 80s and 90s. The
Garrison attracts a great crowd thanks to some of the eclectic
happenings booked here: Wavelength, Trampoline Hall lectures, Turning
Point dance parties, and Pillow Fight League matches, just to name a
few. The acoustics are good and the stage lighting is bright enough to
not need a flash. It’s intimate enough without feeling too cramped and
when it’s cramped it’s not sweltering hot either. We hope it will
achieve legendary status someday as one of the city’s top venues.

As Canada’s largest festival of its kind, Inside Out’s mission has
always been to promote and exhibit film and video by or about members of
the lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans-gendered community. For 11 days in
May, you can come out and experience this unique event that features
both international and local film screenings, artist talks, panel
discussions, installations and parties. http://www.insideout.ca/
Friday May 24, 2013 – Fag and Fado present Queer Noise Solidarity (QNS) @ Christie Pits Park.
A gigantic experimental noise event. Conducted by Wednesday Lupypciw,
featuring the musical talents of: Alaska B, Celina Carrol, Conny Nowé,
Eleanor King, Heidi Chan, Kareem, Karen Frostitution, Laura Hartley,
Rita McKeough, Samara Liu, Shavonne Tovah Somvong, and Tyla
Crowhurst-Smith.
One
dozen drummers, each with their own kit, will occupy a space between
the baseball field and the wooded area in Christie Pits Park where they
raise the racket of their percussional superjam to the outer limits of
the stratosphere over 3 different, intense sessions. The drummer’s sound
vibrations are akin to ripples in a pond in political/intentional
realms, as well as psychic/aesthetic zones.
Inspired
by the roles that feminists play in developing community solidarity
across many social justice trajectories including LGBTQI2S, anti-racist
and anti-poverty movements, Queer Noise Solidarity (QNS) also blows the
roof off the traditionally white dude-dominated art world of rock n’
roll.
The Details: QNS is a queer feminist project. QNS is proudly matronized by Fado Performance Art Centre http://www.performanceart.ca/ Bloor Street West between Christie Street and Crawford Street@ Christie Station MAP: http://goo.gl/maps/wv9XX

Saturday May 25, 2013 -Documentary on Gay Senior’s Golden Years @ Tiff Light Box Inside Out Film Festival.
The
film: “Before You Know It” focuses on the lives of three gay seniors as
they navigate the challenges and surprises of daily life and love in
their golden years. According to the film’s producers, the film raises
the curtain on the neglected senior segment of the LGBT community, which
is five times less likely to access social services compared to their
heterosexual counterparts and twice as likely to live alone.
For
whatever reason, it is believed that the Lgbt community never ages;
once they pass a certain age, they just seem to disappear from society’s
consciousness. Because of this, the seniors of the Lgbt community are
lacking in a reliable support structure. It also does not help that for a
majority of their lives, same-sex relationships have not been
recognized by the federal and state governments as legally-binding.
The Details: The
director will be present for a Q&A following the film. We would
love to see members of the LGBTQ community and especially our elders
(Primetimers) at the screening. Inside Out Toronto LGBT Film Festival

to reel in people whose leisure time doesn’t revolve around Fridays and
