Wednesday December 3, 2014 - Performative lecture by Zach Pearl, on Queer Theory Co-Opted @ Artscape Queer theory emerged in the early 90s, coupled with the rise of third wave feminism. Originally, it was a radical and politicized attempt to push the frontiers of gender and identity. Recently, however, with the movement of “queer” into mainstream media, queer theory has become a hot topic, or, at its worst, a red herring used by artists and curators to project meaning onto otherwise aimless work. The final instalment in a three-part series seeking to break down big ideas in contemporary art, this lecture will diagram the principles of queer theory and question how successfully they translate into a gallery context using local and international exhibitions and artworks as examples. 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm FREE Artscape Youngplace, 180 Shaw Street Toronto, ON http://artscapeyoungplace.ca/event/some-disassembly-required-queer-co-opted/
