Friday January 3, 2014 - Tits and Toques @ The Henhouse. A small, independent promotions company set up by Krystle Merrow and Ailsa Blair in January 2012. Bloody Yank Promotions was specifically born to accommodate the idea that Toronto needed a queer event night that wasn't driven towards hip hop or house, but alternative music you can dance your ass off to. So, Tits & Toques was born. Henhouse 416-534-5939 henhouseto@gmail.com. 1532 Dundas St W. Queer West Toronto, Toronto http://henhousetoronto.com/

Saturday January 4, 2014 - Closing Cermonies for Netural Bar All good things come to an end...Neutral first came into existence on October 1st, 2004, and first openeded to the public on April 1st, 2005... Neutral will be CLOSING forever on January 4th, 2014. Why you ask? As most of you know, Neutral has always catered to alternative subcultures. In the last couple of years, patronage in those subcultures has decreased while expenses have increased. It pains me to say that Neutral is no longer a sustainable business... as a result, the Neutral era is coming to an end. The bar will be open for another 10 weeks. A new group of owners will be taking over in January, and they will not be operating as an alternative bar.

Saturday January 4, 2014 - Toronto's HAPPY NEW QUEER 2014 SLOWDANCE! Come celebrate a HAPPY NEW YEAR at Toronto's HAPPY NEW QUEER 2014 SLOWDANCE!While technically it won't be New Year's eve, we are still going to count down to Midnight and find someone to smooch and blow noisemakers and sing Auld Lang Syne because Why not?

With a lending library of designated dancers for all you wallflowers, and a dancecard-booklet to set up dances in advance (should you choose to), Toronto Queer Slowdance has all slow songs, all night long! (Except for the occasional intermission when we play the fastest songs we can find!) It's high school with a happy ending. Come and experience why slow is beautiful, and why love is not ironic.

PS. Fabulous and inspired attire, while desired, is not required. But for goodness sake
 - this is our NEW YEAR edition! Wear whatever you feel will let you break into 2014 in the most magnificent way possible. It's up to you! Finally, you do not have to be queer to attend this party, but you must have an open mind, an open heart, and have open arms.

We are always looking for designated dancers for our evenings. If you are outgoing, warm, and willing to undertake the very serious duty and responsibility of inviting wallflowers out onto the dancefloor - if in fact, such a prospect gives you great joy - then please contact the organizers at inconsolablecat@hotmail.com.

Friday January 10 to Thursday January 16, 2014 - I Am Divine" Toronto Theatrical Engagement @ Bloor Hot Docs Cinema. I AM DIVINE is the story of Divine, aka Harris Glenn Milstead, from his humble beginnings as an overweight, teased Baltimore youth to internationally recognized drag superstar through his collaboration with filmmaker John Waters. Spitting in the face of the status quos of body image, gender identity, sexuality, and preconceived notions of beauty, Divine was the ultimate outsider turned underground royalty. With a completely committed in-your-face style, he blurred the line between performer and personality, and revolutionized pop culture. I AM DIVINE is a definitive biographical portrait that charts the legendary icon’s rise to infamy and emotional complexities. Thursday January 16 to 18, 2014 - Preview for Queer Play The Way Back To Thursday by Rob Kempson @ Theatre Passe Muraille. The Way Back To Thursday, which will premiere in January as a part of the Theatre Passe Muraille 2013-14 season. The Way Back To Thursday is written by Rob Kempson who is the Associate Artistic Producer at Theatre Passe Muraille, but also the composer/performer of The Way Back To Thursday. The Way Back To Thursday runs from January 16 to February 8 at Theatre Passe Muraille in the Mainspace. It’s a two-person song cycle (entirely sung musical form) that chronicles the 30-year relationship between a grandmother and her grandson as they negotiate issues of sexuality, aging, family relationships, and ultimately, love. Cameron (the grandson) wants to keep his special relationship with Grandma as a time capsule—an unchanging part of his identity, reflective of only their past. While his coming out is certainly at play here, this is much more than a coming out story. It’s about families who embrace the queer community, and about allowing people into to one’s own journey of sexual identity. More than anything, The Way Back To Thursday is a musical about unconditional love that crosses generations, genders and lifetimes . Box Office: http://www.passemuraille.on.ca/category/2013-14-season/the-way-back-to-thursday/ Previews Jan 16-18. Thursday January 16, 2014 - Alex Bierk: Pitfalls and Withdrawals opening reception @ General Hardware Contemporary Gallery. Alex Bierk transposes images from his past onto canvas and deconstructs source material into abstraction as visceral reclamations of his lived experience. This body of work focuses on the connection between youth and the formation of identity and the disappearance and distortion of memory. Bierks work recounts a struggle unique to him it finds its cultural context in the recent and widespread epidemic of OxyContin abuse in Ontario. By using candid photographic snapshots as the basis for these paintings he exposes an unglamorous autobiography in contrast to the more sensationalized depictions of opiate abuse found in popular media. 6:00 PM - 9:00 PM General Hardware Contemporary 1520 Queen St. West, Toronto, Ontario http://generalhardware.ca/

Thursday January 16, 2014 - Opening Reception for Vancouver Artist Ben Reeves @ Jessica Bradley Gallery Presenting new works by Vancouver painter Ben Reeves who is known for his sumptuous use of paint in compositions that deftly explore the relationship between abstraction and depiction. Reeves disassembles and renders imagery in a field where the represented subject collides with the painterly gesture leading the eye to travel back and forth across a visual threshold between the material surface of the picture and an illusory space beyond In a second group of oval-shaped works he reverses this complex relationship in paintings of mirrors that capture a reflected imaginary space behind the viewer 6:30-8:30pm Jessica Bradley Gallery 74 Miller Street, Toronto, Ontario http://jessicabradleyinc.com/

"Cold Iron Is A Titanic Comedy" (72 minutes, 2014) "Welcome to the headlights of an absurdist kabuki opera film narrative! a tin-foil road-trip to Florida & the British Museum, in faster Chinese that dialogues over the electric kettle of Toronto's City Hall and rotates in perpetual stillness towards a tsunami of row-boat performances!!!"

An independently produced project by artists living and working in Toronto Canada. Written and directed by Wesley Rickert, with studio & outdoor locations, that included Toronto City Hall, Kensington Market, Little Italy and the city's bicycle lanes, as well as Florida's sight-seeing coastal highway A1A. While not the basis of this digital film they do provide place and time references for a timeless "kabuki opera film narrative" crashed by absurdist poetry and elaborate costumes, nudity, stylized movements and an original sound-track by the electronic noise orchestra Burning Iceberg. REVIEW http://www.253469.com/cold-iron-is-a-titanic-comedy-review.html

Monday January 27, 2014 - Panel Discussion LGBT Rights in India @ Osgoode Hall Law School (York University) On December 10, 2013, the Indian Supreme Court upheld a colonial-era criminal law, Section 377 of the Penal Code, which serves to criminalize homosexuality. The Supreme Court overturned the historic “Naz” decision of the Delhi High Court, which had struck down Section 377 in 2009. That far-reaching judgment had upheld LGBT equality under the constitution. It was hailed in India as a landmark in equality litigation, and celebrated by activists in other countries as a model for constitutional challenges.

Panelists

Andrew Pinto (partner at Pinto Wray James LLP) will provide a summary of the Supreme Court 2013 Kaushal v Naz ruling. He will compare the constitutional arguments in Kaushal v Naz with those of the 2009 Delhi High Court ruling Naz Foundation v Union of India and others.
Vivek Divan (Policy Specialist at the United Nations Development Programme's HIV, Health and Development Group) will speak about the 'back story' of the Naz case - its origins, the context within which it was filed, the strategies considered, parallel processes, and community mobilization. He will discuss the implications of this history and the judgments of 2009 and 2013. This will include an overview of critiques and debates that were generated within LGBT activism in India on the Naz petition, the opposition that formed against it, and how this led to a strengthened social movement against Section 377.

Nancy Nicol (Principal Investigator of Envisioning Global LGBT Human Rights) will speak about the background of the Naz Foundation case against s 377 and show excerpts from her documentary in progress, "No Easy Road to Freedom,” which examines the history of the LGBT movement in relation to the 377 challenge.

Vijaya Chikermane (Executive Director of ASAAP: Alliance for South Asian AIDS Prevention.) will address the significant ramifications of the 2009 Delhi High Court decision for the South Asian diaspora community in Toronto and responses to the ruling. In 2013, the Indian Supreme Court’s conflicting decision also evoked a strong response from the diaspora in which ASAAP was at the forefront. She will consider implications for diaspora activism on issues pertaining to home countries. Special attention is placed on how racialization impacts and influences our responses.

Friday January 31, 2014 - Toronto Punk Band PUP pulls into the Garrison tonight. A punk rock band from Toronto. Who play riff-heavy, slap-you-in-the-face songs, dripping with energy. they’ve shared the stage with Sloan, Tokyo Police Club, Titus Andronicus and Born Ruffians. They’ve toured cross country and into the states with Hollerado and the Pack A.D. They’ve played sweet slots at NXNE, Pop Montreal, and CMW. They drink, sleep on a lot of floors, and get shitty. .

As of lately, Toronto has been the breeding grounds for some of the best punk rock bands around. The scene is both a blessing and a curse. There seem to be 1,000+ loud rock bands in this city vying for attention, but when you are able to cut through the static, everyone seems to take notice. This is the case for Toronto four-piece, PUP.

What sets PUP apart in this booming scene is their ability to fuse raw punk energy with catchy earworms, big hooks, and scream-along choruses. Their songs are loud and fast, equal parts unchecked energy and calculated arrangements, with hair-pin turns, raging guitar riffs, and an overload of gang vocals.
