Goodbye to the Toronto Queer Arts Festival?

Press Release: Gay West Community Network Inc.

December 5 2014 10:30 pm

We would like to thank everyone who has supported Toronto Queer Arts Festival  (Queer West Fest) over the last 14 years. We are proud not only of the diversity of events, but our ability to try and make them accessible to all. The Arts Festival has always been run on a shoestring budget, and while the Festival has not gone into debt, mounting a Festival in 2015 would likely stretch our limited budget too far. Instead, we have decided to focus our energy on expanding our Film Festival from an evening to a three day event. It has always been one of our most popular events, and it is our hope that more people will be able to enjoy a greater range of films and engagement with artists.

We hopefully won’t be saying goodbye to the Arts Festival forever. The Festival is not just reliant on money but volunteers too. As you can imagine, running a festival takes a lot of work. We’ve been very lucky to have had a great group of people involved with the Festival from its inception, but as it has grown, it has been harder to find event managers and venues to support the festival. We’ve always been a small team, but without more volunteers, a large festival just isn’t realistic.

We don’t want to end this message on a negative note though. We are always looking for new volunteers and ideas. If you are interested in supporting our Film Festival as a volunteer or have any ideas about how to develop our Arts Festival in the future, we would love to hear from you.
